Originally from Cavan (moved w/family in 85). Currently living in the US, Maryland. I've been back on the bike for the past 5 years and am interested in possibly doing a little racing back home in the current year. What category should I be looking at. My currect USAC designation =
Cat 1 (expert) mtb
Cat 2 Cyclocross
I race 35+ or 40+ Cat 1 mtb and 35+ or 40+ elite cx. I am the current maryland state champion in the 40+ mtb class....though take that with a grain of salt ;-)
So..If I was to look at perhaps coming home to race nationals what class should I look at? I'd be interested in racing both cx and mtb.
Cheers

Hey Kcon,
First thing, if you want to race nationals here, make sure you have and "IRL" UCI code on your licence.
As you're over 40 you can race either Vets (40+) or Elites in the MTB Nationals.
For CX all the senior cat's here start as a mass start race. Not sure if there's a separate Vets category in CX, but if there is, you're obviously eligible for that if you wanted.
edit: Also, it's worth noting that in this year's MTB nationals in the Elite category there were the following ages.... 1st: 39 3rd: 45+ 4th: 38.

Yes we place the vets in cross races within the main race.
Like else where tho, the best riders in this country are mostly over 30 and indeed 40, so the vets is competitive in cx and xc but the vets competing in elites are too.
like the Joey snub Philip...funny... |

Thanks Guys...that makes sense. Same on this side of the pond, the older guys are often among the fastest. It would likely be easier for me to simply get an Irish licence as the USAC only issues UCI licences to Pro riders...I'll look into it. Thanks for the help
best

37 ffs....
Scope it out in the first race. Do the vets, they are pretty quick, if too short, do the Elites. Hopefully we will have diff cats next year, see other thread.
cyclocross, its all one, 1 hour of racing.
Karl, I hope you have a US accent, very cool. |
